MCELHINNEY NAMED CCM/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Springfield, Mass. - Springfield Falcons goaltender Curtis McElhinney has been named the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 11, 2012, the American Hockey League announced on Monday.
McElhinney was perfect in both of his starts this past weekend, making 20 saves in a 2-0 win over the Connecticut Whale on Friday and then setting aside all 35 Norfolk Admirals bids on Sunday in a 5-0 victory. The consecutive shutouts were the Falcons' first since Jan. 21 to 26, 1996, when they blanked three-straight opponents. Springfield exited the weekend with an AHL-best 8-1-0-2 record and is atop the Eastern Conference with 18 points.
McElhinney's four shutouts are the most by a Falcons netminder since Manny Legace recorded a franchise-record five in the 1995-1996 season. The eighth-year pro's shutout streak is at 137 minutes and 46 seconds, as the Falcons have gone nearly seven-straight periods dating back to Nov. 4 without allowing an opponent to score.
Springfield's team goals-against average of 1.55 is the best in the league, and the club's four shutouts in 11 games marks the fastest it has reached that point in the organization's 19-year history (43 games, 1995-1996).
McElhinney, who was named the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for October, is 8-1-1 on the season with a .955 save percentage and a 1.29 goals-against average, leading the league in wins and shutouts.
The AHL Player of the Week honor is the third of McElhinney's career and first since the 2006-2007 campaign. This marks the 20th time in Falcons history that a player has garnered this accolade.
McElhinney will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Falcons home game.
Springfield embarks on its first road trip of the season this week, heading to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday to meet the Penguins and then venturing to Norfolk to battle the Admirals on Friday and Saturday. Springfield closes out the away stretch on Friday, Nov. 23 in Portland against the Pirates.
The Falcons return home for "Movember Night presented by Baystate Health" on Saturday, Nov. 24 against the Manchester Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. The first 1,000 fans into the building that night will receive mustaches as part of an effort to generate awareness of prostate cancer and other male illnesses.
